Types Of Cats In Our Program
Our mission is to rescue stray, abandoned, abused and homeless companion animals; sometimes we rescue cats that, for various reasons, can not live as companion animals. These cats are still in need of rescue and become part of our Barn Cat Program. There are four categories of cats in our program:
- Friendly cats who have litter-box issues, thus making them unsuitable for house life
- Friendly cats who are too independent and/or high energy which makes their house behavior unsuitable
- Feral or semi-feral adult cats who are too shy and fearful of people and who much prefer the company of other cats and animals
- Feral cats who must be relocated due to the unsafe nature of their original areas
Adult cats in our Barn Cat Program have no other options and are not up for adoption in our customary adoption process. This program offers these wonderful animals a chance at a safe life that is best for them – they have nowhere else to go and staying caged at our shelter does not help them.
What These Cats Need
Do you have a working barn or a safe, heated outbuilding? If so, these cats need you as much as you need them!
You are providing a wonderful and generous gift to these animals that need a safe and warm place to live out their lives. In return and to earn their “keep”, they will no doubt keep the rodent population down and keep them out of your buildings and barns. We all know how those rodents can destroy structures! They also provide companionship for horses and other livestock.
What WE Provide
All of our cats in this program are fully vetted! This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- At least 1 round of Rabies and Distemper vaccines; often, these cats have had their booster vaccines as well!
- All cats are tested for FIV (Feline Immune-Deficiency Virus) and Feline Leukemia
- All have been given at least 1 round of a comprehensive de-flea/de-worm/ear mite treatment, often receiving more than 1 round while in our care.
- All cats have been spay/neutered! Yes, that’s right! You’ll never have to worry about our cats making kittens on your property.
What YOU Provide
When adopting one of our cats in our Barn Cat Program, you agree to provide the following:
- A commitment to providing your new barn cat with a forever home
- Adequate, safe, and warm shelter in barns, buildings, or stables
- Daily food and water – these kitties need nourishment to catch those mice!
- Veterinary care, as needed
- A secure place to keep them for the first couple of weeks while they acclimate to your barn and environment. This can be a tack room, stall or any other secure indoor enclosure that they cannot escape from. We can lend you a cage if no secure area is available. We will also offer all the guidance, advice and information you need if this is your first time adopting a barn cat. We will also provide the transportation for your new cats!
